On Sunday 12 October Wells Food Festival returns once again to celebrate the best of Somerset’s wonderful local produce. 2013’s inaugural one-day event attracted over 3500 visitors and was such a success that we’re doing it again. This year’s festival will be bigger and better. We will be creating a Forgotten Feast banquet prepared from the abundance of Somerset’s autumn produce for 200 people to enjoy.
Venue: Bishop’s Barn, Silver Street, Wells BA5 1SG
Time: 1.30 for 2.00pm
Price: £30.00
Vegetables too ugly for supermarket shelves; orchard fruit left to rot on the ground; wild game shot but not sold to customers; food waste thrown out not recycled – the shocking tales of modern food waste are legion. Tom Hunt is a campaigner who turns his hand to rescuing forgotten foods and turning them into banquets.
Check out the menu! It includes pork from a pig brought up entirely on food waste and cooked nose to tail; local wild game and foraged herbs; vegetables that are not beautiful enough for supermarkets; sweet treats from the autumn hedgerows; bread and other local products donated by local market stalls, food shops and allotments.
To draw attention to the problems of food waste and awareness of the unexpected foods available in Somerset there will be a short talk by Patrick Holden of the Sustainable Food Trust.
